ASB and class council have been preparing for Homecoming since the end of last school year. The theme spanning this year’s dance was Pixar, and each class was assigned a Pixar-themed movie to represent their grade level. ASB started with the planning for the Homecoming dance at the end of last school year.
“At first our numbers of participants, like dancers and things, were a lot smaller [when Portola was first established], and now they’ve grown so much.” ASB Advisor and Social Studies teacher Emily Sheridan said. “We have hundreds of students involved in that show, and that is such an amazing feeling to see how homecoming can bring together so many people on campus.”
ASB was in charge of setting up the dance while class council took lead in choreographing the dances for the halftime show. After the Pixar theme was chosen by ASB, Class Council was in charge of the build for the backdrops and the choreography for each class. The efforts of Class Council were working alongside senior class president and vice president Arjun Rajkumar and Ayush Badari, according to class council adviser Otto Lopez.
“I really liked the theme this year, Pixar.” Lopez said. “I think it’s super fun, and the students’ creativity has just exploded. They’ve done some really cool things and I’m really excited for the coming Homecoming.”
The class council enlisted student choreographers to direct the dances performed by each grade level during the Homecoming halftime show. In the weeks leading up to the Homecoming game, each class council held dance practices after school and once during office hours. The halftime performance costumes were coordinated by senior class president and vice president Arjun Rajikumar and Ayush Badari, who act in accordance with a specific budget according to Lopez.
“This year we had the most participants that we’ve ever had.” Sheridan said.”I’m really proud of how the week went. I’m proud of all the hard work that the students put into it.”
ASB helped themed dress-up days and lunchtime activities take place leading up to Homecoming weekend. Students can expect additional school spirit days and fundraisers hosted by ASB in the future.
