With the end of the school year approaching, sports seasons are finishing and seniors are preparing to graduate—leaving behind a legacy and passing on their wisdom to the next generation. For seniors in the Portola Pep Squad, that means helping advise the cheer clinic, a three-day process where past and potential members review the tryout dance and cheer with the assistance of the graduating seniors.
Senior Hanna Kim has been a part of Portola Pep Squad since her freshman year, making her clinic experience a full-circle moment. Seeing all the newcomers nervously trying out for the program brought back feelings of nostalgia, according to Hanna.
“I think it’s fun being able to watch people go through what I went through and it’s nice to be able to pass on my knowledge,” Kim said. “I went through the same exact process for four years straight, and I completely understand the anxiety that comes with it and how scared you are of everything. So it’s nice to be able to be there to comfort people.”
Head Pep Squad coach and math teacher Michele Correll shared how meaningful it is to watch seniors grow into confident leaders after years on the team. According to Correll, these seniors play an important role in guiding new hopefuls through both the technical and logistical parts of tryout day.
“They help them with technique for jumps, keeping their chest up, pointing their toes and if [the cone created with their arms is] touching their forehead or their temple [during their jumps],” Correll said. “On tryout day, [the seniors are] outside hype them up, getting them ready. They give them their stickers so they have their numbers, and then they let them know when they come in and when they come out.”
Four-year Pep Squad member Kathy Pedram helped lead the cheer and dance, teaching newcomers the correct moves and words. She participated in demonstrations and guided participants through the routines. Her involvement allowed athletes to practice with experienced members, supporting their preparation for tryouts.
“It’s been super fun, seeing all the new people trying out, and it’s wonderful to see everyone’s spirit grow more and more every year,” Pedram said. “It’s also nice to see that all the returners are really helping everyone. It’s a beautiful part of this program.”
