Kali Uchis’ fifth studio album, “Sincerely,” marking her first project entirely in English, was released on May 9. The album contains 14 tracks, including standout singles such as “Heaven is a Home…” and “All I Can Say—” all of which show Uchis’ signature style of yearnful lyrics and dreamy melodies.
“Heaven is a Home…”
One of the emotional standouts in Uchis’ album, this song contains dreamy instrumentals with emotional and heartfelt harmonies that mirror a softly sung lullaby. In this song, Uchis discusses finding peace, love, emotional safety and comfort within a person rather than a place. With lyrics like “See a smiling face / And it gives me faith” and “Heaven is a home wherever I’m with you,” Uchis expresses how a home can be a sense of belonging found in meaningful relationships, a message that listeners relate with. The message, along with the introspective lyrics is why the song is one of my favorites on the album.
“Sugar! Honey! Love!”
As the second song on the album, “Sugar! Honey! Love!” is not only just a playful and upbeat song—it is also a song that demonstrates Uchis’ versatility. Many of Uchis’ songs contain reflective lyrics, such as in the previous song, “Heaven is a Home,” but this track has a brighter, more flirtatious tone. Lyrics such as “Every day was gray, you put color back to my world” emphasize Uchis’ feelings of love toward the object of her affection because of how much they have positively impacted her life. This song is quickly becoming a fan favorite on social media, and one of mine as well.
“Sunshine and Rain”
In “Sunshine and Rain,” Uchis captures the duality of love and personal growth, highlighting both the ups and downs of both processes. The lyrics “Gave you my heart to hold, will I end up empty-handed? / Riding through the storm brought me much-needed clarity” reflect the feeling of uncertainty for the future, but simultaneously acknowledging the beneficial lessons that come from a challenge or difficult process. This song reveals Uchis’ vulnerability and offers an honest portrayal of life’s complexities, such as identity and relationships. Due to the immense relatability and connection of the song, “Sunshine and Rain” is going to have to be my absolute favorite on the album, “Sincerely,”.
Overall, “Sincerely,” is a true testament to Uchis’ growth as an artist and her ability to blend emotional depth with musical versatility. Uchis’ tracks offer a perspective on love and identity, making it not only personal, but universally relatable. Uchis uses this album to connect with her audience, making it not only one that invites listeners who primarily enjoy English tracks, but one that speaks to her entire fanbase, old and new.
