American rapper Kendrick Lamar and singer SZA performed the first of three consecutive shows delivering a memorable performance that highlighted their artistry during their Grand National Tour, May 21 at SoFi Stadium.
Lamar and SZA played 52 songs throughout the night, drawing from their recent albums “GNX” and “SOS Deluxe: Lana,” as well as some older hits. The duo also brought out special guests during the night, such as multi Grammy Award winner Lizzo.
The concert was set to begin at 7 p.m., although typical concert-goers, such as myself, arrived earlier, to be at the front of the lines for entrance to seats or exclusive concert items. There were merchandise stands both inside and outside the stadium, providing fans with quicker lines and easier access to merchandise. Farther away from the stadium was SZA’s pop-up shop, carrying her new brand, “Not Beauty.” Although I didn’t attend the pop-up, SZA made an appearance, visiting fans waiting to go inside. This surprise appearance created a heartfelt moment that strengthened the bond between her and her supporters.
Opening the Grand National Tour was American record producer and DJ Mustard. At around 7:45 p.m., Mustard entertained the crowd with a lineup of popular hits, including “Birds of a Feather” and “Party in the USA,” prompting fans to jump out of their seats, dance and sing. At around 8:30 p.m., Lamar appeared, playing “wacced out murals.” Following the next five songs, SZA rose up from below the stage to sing their hit song, “30 for 30.” Lamar played tracks such as fan favorite, “Like That,” while SZA played hits such as “F2F,” and “Special (feat. Lizzo).” The duo also performed “All the Stars,” which was featured in the 2018 Black Panther soundtrack.
The most captivating part of the show was not solely their impressive stage presence, interactions with the fans or the background dancers movements. To me, it was the visual effects that brought the whole show together — during Lamar’s segment, graphics of giant statues and luxury cars were displayed on screen, while SZA performed against a backdrop of plant and bug illustrations making audience members feel as if teleported to the background presented.
Overall, the concert was an entertaining fusion of music, visuals and energy that truly showcased the artistry and chemistry of Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Their seamless performances, enhanced by the stunning stage design and guest appearance left fans with an unforgettable experience that celebrated both their individual talents and their powerful collaboration.
