In light of the eight live-action Spider-Man films re-releasing in theaters between April and June to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Columbia Pictures, we have curated our picks for the top five adaptations of the fan-favorite superhero’s story. The series truly never gets old with fans always raving about its latest developments, so join us as we ramble about our most loved (and not so loved) aspects of these films.
1. Spider-Man: No Way Home – 2021
It is no surprise that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” became the highest grossing Spider-Man film, accumulating nearly $2 billion in box office revenue with its rollercoaster of emotions from thrilling action scenes to a heart-wrenching ending. Even those without an existing affinity for Spider-Man could undoubtedly enjoy the unique storyline and endearing moments between Parker and MJ Watson. Most memorable, the film portrays how fan service is done right with an iconic reunion of all three Spider-Man actors as Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire reprise their roles and join Holland to help fight against a band of villains.
2. The Amazing Spider-Man – 2012
In “The Amazing Spider-Man,” Garfield tries his hand at Peter Parker and comes out with one of the most accurate comic book adaptations of the character so far. Garfield simultaneously captures Parker’s sensitivity, nerdiness and charisma along with providing great action sequences that show off Spider-Man’s abilities. Emma Stone’s portrayal of Gwen Stacy also emerges as a fan-favorite Spider-Man love interest with her sharp personality and empowering intelligence (not to mention her fashionable outfits), distinguishing her as a strong, inspiring character who brings depth to their story.
3. Spider-Man – 2002
Considered a classic superhero film by many, Maguire’s “Spider-Man” marked the first live-action portrayal of the beloved hero and lived up to expectations by sticking to the comic books’ central messages of responsibility. Specifically, Maguire showcases his valiant spirit, consistently putting the safety of others before his own in dangerous fights against threats to his city. Despite this, newer generations of Spider-Man fans who grew up with Garfield’s and Holland’s franchises do not share the nostalgic feeling of Maguire’s films and noted that his acting of the Spider-Man alter ego is not as faithful to the comics since he is too awkward and not as extroverted.
4. Spider-Man: Far From Home – 2019
In “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” Peter Parker, still grieving the deaths of several Avengers, looks towards a relaxing getaway to Europe when a new threat known as the “Elementals” emerges. This storyline, however, is not exactly special amongst many MCU plots in which a new villain is introduced. Compared to our top three picks, the plot is more impersonal and unoriginal, but the humor and character development keep audiences engaged. This film captivates audiences with an impeccable balance of intense action-packed scenes and moments of growth and self-reflection that only further audiences’ love for the film’s hilarious, dynamic characters.
5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – 2014
After gaining and adjusting to his power and responsibility in the first film, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” opens with an experienced Peter Parker regularly fighting New York City crime. After graduating high school, Parker must consider his future, prompting him to confront his ability to balance his role as Spider-Man with his life as Peter. Along with their attachment to Parker’s story, audiences eagerly follow Gwen Stacy as she continues to pursue her scientific passions and advance her education. However, many fans were ultimately left disappointed due to the unfortunate events Stacy undergoes and the film’s overall subpar plot development that introduced too many side storylines, leaving insufficient time to clearly explore each.
