Portola High hosted IUSD’s annual jazz ensemble festival in the theater on March 27. Band Director Kyle Traska conducted three pieces for Portola High’s performance: “Splanky” (composed by Neal Hefti and arranged by Sammy Nestico), “Over the Rainbow” (composed by Harold Arlena and arranged by Dave Wolpe) and “Samba Del Gringo” (composed by Gordon Goodwin). “I think one of the most exciting things is having our students see what the students that are their same age and level at other schools are working on and what they're able to achieve as well,” Traska said.

Marianne Chan is a Photo Editor for her first year on the Portola Pilot. This year, she hopes to refine her multimedia skills and contribute her opinions on a range of different topics. When she’s not poring over novels and webcomics or watching character animatics on repeat, Marianne can be found trying to one-up increasingly eccentric food combinations. Or procrastinating on every assignment imaginable.
Claire Liu is a staff writer for her first year on the Portola Pilot. This year, she’s hoping to experiment with journalism and find a unique creative voice. If she’s not in a comatose state because of sleep deprivation, you can find her doodling on her phone, listening to old Italian men, or watching long-form improv sessions.
