British singer and songwriter RAYE released her second studio album, “THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.” on March 27. The 17-track record, described as a musical autobiography, explores themes of vulnerability, perseverance and healing.
“Winter Woman.”
The fifth track on the album, “Winter Woman,” paints a vivid picture of a woman grappling with the aftermath of a failed relationship. Contrasted with the jazz-heavy arrangements in the album, “Winter Woman” is composed of classical string instruments, including a violin feature woven into the interlude. RAYE’s choice to use string over brass instruments establishes a somber and melancholy atmosphere that marks the beginning of her journey of heartbreak to eventual self-acceptance.
“I Hate The Way I Look Today.”
Jazz-infused and upbeat, this song begins by describing a daily struggle with self-image. Starting with phrases such as “I hate the way I look today” and “Man, if only I was pretty,” RAYE captures moments where we feel unattractive and struggle with low self-confidence. Nevertheless, the inclusion of a saxophone solo towards the middle of the track adds a layer of optimism to the song, marking a shift from self-criticism to self-acceptance. By the end, the lyrics become more uplifting: “You must change the way you talk to yourself / There’s only you that can do it, only me that can try / To love the way I look tonight.” These lines conclude the track, reminding listeners to be a little gentler and more compassionate toward themselves.
“WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!”
As the title suggests, “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!” describes RAYE’s humorous and impatient longing for a lifelong romantic partner. Released as a single on Sept. 19, 2025, the 13th track of the album has garnered popularity on TikTok through its fun energy, emotionally-charged lyrics and complex rhythms. The song’s immediate and explosive opening, driven by brass instruments, mirrors RAYE’s frantic emotional state in her pursuit for a romantic partner.
“Happier Times Ahead.”
As the album concludes, “Happier Times Ahead.” transitions the album from melancholic themes to a more optimistic note. This uplifting song reminds listeners to hold onto hope amidst life’s hardships through a narrative of three characters: a young woman whose loved one gave up on her, a middle-aged man with financial burdens and Auntie Jean, who mourns the loss of her lifelong partner. Despite the different forms of grief these characters experience, they all hold onto a glimmer of hope that there will be “happier times ahead.” After detailing a character’s story, RAYE shifts to a vibrant chorus containing jazzy brass instrumentals that provide a sharp contrast to the struggles described in the verses.
Through the album’s transition from vulnerability to healing and acceptance, the album encompasses RAYE’s long-held view that “music is medicine” that she wants to share with the world. This message, combined with RAYE’s musical versatility, creates a powerful yet comforting album.
