Spring Sports Postponed
Updated April 7: The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has cancelled all spring sectional, regional, state championship events, according to CIF executive director Ron Nocetti in an official statement.
Due to the current COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the athletics department has either canceled or postponed all scheduled spring sports events. All IUSD athletic directors plan to meet on April 6 to discuss the current situation regarding future sports activities.
As of now, there will be no banquets, meetings or practices, and all school facilities are closed.
Concerns regarding COVID-19 resulted in the district’s initial decision to disallow spectators at sports events.
“It’s hard to come back from cancellations. A lot of schools in our area and outside of our area are canceling, [and] it would be impossible to reschedule all those games,” athletics director Katie Levensailor said. “Athletics is fantastic and very important but not more important than everybody’s health.”
Though challenging, some athletes remain hopeful that their seasons will resume when IUSD campuses re-open
“It’s really tough knowing that my teammates and I have worked so hard to perfect our skills and increase our ability only to have our season possibly canceled,” varsity track and field captain and junior Natalie Ng said. “Having the drive to work even without the promise of reward is difficult, but it’s something that I think all athletes should keep in mind during this season.”
