ASB members invite the student body to “A Night at Gatsby’s,” the official title for the 1920s-themed winter formal. In order to promote student attendance, there will also be a chance for students to win free tickets by sending a picture to the official winter formal account, @phs.askings.

The student body gathered in the gym on Friday to attend the winter pep rally, which was hosted and organized by ASB. Winter sports athletes were recognized, and ASB announced the winter formal theme of “A Night at Gatsby’s.”

Throughout the pep rally, ASB members directed several activities, such as the staff versus student arm wrestling house competition. Campus security George Mares from Poseidon house won the tournament, pushing the house into the lead.

Athletic commissioners and sophomores Madison Lam and Mustafa Hassan introduced the winter sport athletes, who ran through doors of the gym before gathering behind ASB members. Similar to the fall pep rally, eight members of each sport participated in a race across the gym floor, with girls basketball team winning.

The Dance 2 class and dance company performed a routine to a medley of songs, featuring remixes of popular hits such as “If I’m Lucky” and “If It Ain’t Love” by Jason Derulo.

At the end of the rally, ASB members promoted winter formal with a short skit by sophomores Annika Lai and Taira Asakura and a brief dance performed by the entire ASB. After, they revealed the winter formal theme to be “A Night at Gatsby’s.” The theme ties in with the novel “The Great Gatsby,” which American literature classes will be reading this semester.

Winter formal will be held on Feb. 24 at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin. Ticket sales begin Feb. 5 at the ASB Office.
