Sophomore Joanna Peng admires the sleek, modern design of iPhones. “I am a fan of Apple because of its simple and very beautiful design,” Peng said.

Apple’s new product lineup launched on Sept. 7 with the tagline “Far Out,” revealing the iPhone 14 series, which includes the iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

Apple also announced three new Apple Watch models: the Series 8, Ultra and SE.

This launch event of the product lineup kicks off a busy fall for the tech giant, as new MacBooks and iPads are coming later this fall, according to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook. Pre-orders for the new Apple Watch started the day of the launch, and the iPhone 14 models arrived in stores on Sept. 16.

The iPhone 14 has several new features, including a new larger 48MP quad-pixel sensor on the back camera and a slightly wider aperture on the front camera. In addition, Apple has invented Dynamic Island, a pill-shaped notch replacement that can change size and shape to display notifications, incoming calls and other system alerts.

The iPhone 14 includes safety features such as car crash detection and satellite SOS. There are also two new colors: midnight (a blackish blue color) and starlight (a whiteish silver color).

Junior Jonathan Kim has already pre-ordered the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

“The one thing I’m most excited for is the camera, actually, not the Dynamic Island, where the buzz has gone,” Kim said. “There’s also an action mode, which stabilizes the camera as you’re running.”

The Apple Watch Series 8 has a larger screen, more durability, faster charging and minor changes to health tracking features, such as a built-in temperature sensor allowing for additional insights into women’s health.

Following the release of the iPhone 14, students have considered upgrading their phones. Freshman Yunny Jang, an iPhone 11 user since winter 2019, is among them.

“It’s been really laggy lately, I’ve been having storage issues,” Jang said. “And I think having a new phone would be such an upgrade.”

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max has a starting price of $1,099. Computer science and business teacher Katherine Dillon said she believes Apple must change its prices or risk losing customers.

“There’s a limit, and they’re reaching that limit, and they’ll just have to sacrifice maybe the amount of products people are buying versus their price point,” Dillon said.

Despite this, Kim thinks buying an iPhone is still worth it.

“I think that it’s a good investment to buy an Apple phone because it’s very convenient to use,” Kim said.
