Thousands of boxes fill up the Second Harvest Food Bank’s warehouse, all created by the hands of hundreds of volunteers over the past few weeks. These packages are ready to be delivered during the COVID-19 epidemic to local pantries and pickup locations.

“So Second Harvest’s mission is to feed all hungry families of OC. I think this is important because everyone deserves to have a meal at home,” Second Harvest volunteer and sophomore Puneet Singh said. “At Second Harvest we package care boxes with food for families to take and cook, which is super fulfilling. Honestly being able to make a difference in someone’s life is such a great feeling.”

Second Harvest has adopted a drive-through distribution method and serves the community every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Honda Center. In addition, the organization has rallied volunteers to deliver food packages at seniors’ doorsteps, as the eldery are advised not to leave the house at this time.

Although Second Harvest has closed down their warehouse and packaging facility for volunteers indefinitely, it is relying on volunteer drivers to deliver these packages to those who need it.

“[Volunteering] is especially important now more than ever because people are in need of food, and they can’t afford it due to being laid off or their work stopping during this pandemic,” Second Harvest volunteer and sophomore Celine Aoki said. “Second Harvest is helping these families that are in need of food and that number is rising because of the lack of income from the virus.”

Second Harvest encourages individuals willing to volunteer to visit its website. Anyone who may be in need of a food package can either call 2-1-1, text 898-21, or visit the 211OC.org website. These services are available 24/7 and can help individuals in need of food.
